He'll just sit there, quietly, and let Sasuke lean. He doesn't know what else to do and he hates it. It always feels like he's one step behind in protecting everyone he cares about... and that's supposed to be his new purpose, isn't it? His new inner fire -- protecting the people he loves and cares about with everything he has.
If that's his life goal, why does he suck at it?
He hadn't been able to help Sasuke. He hadn't been able to break out of his own head. He nearly got Katara killed as a result, dragging her into a fight against two nearly immortal beings that wouldn't hesitate to rip them apart, piece by piece.
He had been useless.
He's supposed to be Sasuke's best friend -- that's what everyone says, anyway, and that's certainly how Zuko feels. Not that he's ever had a friend before he came here, but all the same, Zuko knows that friends are sacred. Treasured beings that you need to protect.
Sasuke has always be there for him. Why can't he ever be there for Sasuke? He's always four steps behind while Tyki Mikk and Kurotsuchi Mayuri and Rhode Kamelot are eight steps ahead.
He can't even comfort him properly.
Zuko's breath hitches, ever so slightly, but the firebender bites down on his tongue, hard.
